What’s required for the best (self-)care for diabetes patients?

As soon as Mediq noticed that the diabetes market was coming under considerable pressure, they reached out to Gupta. Their question? “How can we create a new kind of added value that’s also commercially attractive?”

When it comes to diabetes, there’s one common issue for healthcare providers: how do you keep costs manageable for the growing number of patients? That was the starting point for Gupta’s collaboration with Mediq, a supplier of diabetes management tools. They asked: “How can we keep adding value in a market that’s increasingly price sensitive?”

Choosing the strategy

The strategy was conceived during the first phase of the project. Working groups and steering committees assessed the existing treatment process for diabetes patients, the parties involved, and the potential opportunities for improving the patients’ experience and level of care. This formed the basis for several new propositions, which were evaluated based on their feasibility and value to patients. It was then up to Mediq to choose which strategy they wanted to make more concrete.

DiaCare

Phase two kicked off with a clear business case and corresponding implementation plan that included the requirements, stakeholders, investments and lead time. Here too, Gupta offered Mediq’s employees their full support. Key stakeholders such as hospitals, health insurance providers and patients were involved in the process to eliminate potential hurdles. That’s how ‘DiaCare’ was born: a program to help diabetes patients gain more insight into their blood sugar levels – and therefore their illness. Trials with hospitals were successful, and patients gave the program positive reviews.

It’s nice to work with Gupta, because it is so clear where we complement each other”

"After four months of development, we presented the concept to the hospitals where we were running the trials. They were immediately enthusiastic: ‘This is the future of diabetes care!’ We focused on the ‘triple aim’: reducing or keeping costs the same, improving the quality of life and improving the healthcare experience. And although it takes time to measure the long-term effects, the initial results are very promising: the level of health is better, fewer consultations are required, and there is a shift towards more online consultations. The insight we gained on how to optimally support the growing number of diabetic patients is very valuable. So much so that this paid program is already running in several hospitals.

To innovate in the healthcare sector, you need to be patient. That’s the lesson that I learned during this project. Gupta sees things quickly, and combined with everyone’s passion, our pace during this project was sometimes too quick for the other stakeholders. And then you might need to take a step back due to resistance and hurdles you didn’t anticipate. Fortunately, we didn’t let that stop us and we got everyone on board. Perhaps because we could always fall back on Gupta’s characteristic structured and scientific approach. An innovative program like this can’t succeed without it.

Roxanne used the word ‘commitment’, but that also applies to me. It’s nice to work with Gupta, because it is so clear where we complement each other. Their scientific perspective and broad healthcare knowledge was an excellent match for our expertise in the diabetes management market. That’s how you find truly innovative solutions that deliver added value to patients, healthcare providers and Mediq itself. DiaCare provides users with more insight into their illness and improves preparation for consultations. And that’s no small feat… I know, from my work and my own experience, how important it is. So you can imagine how extremely proud I am that I’m able to contribute to this!"

We were able to quickly align and learned a lot from each other”

"For three of Mediq’s treatment areas, Gupta was asked to come up with sustainable strategies for the future. The collaboration with Mediq’s project manager Doescha Motmans, the team, the director from Gupta and my colleagues who were responsible for Mediq’s other projects gave me a strong sense of commitment during the project. I worked intensively with the client team – which provided a healthy dose of stress – and at the same time, I could discuss ideas with my coworkers. We were able to quickly align and learned a lot from each other. Also the time span – I was part of the project from start to finish – made it super exciting and enjoyable.

In just two months, our team developed a completely new proposition from scratch that aligned with the different parties in the market. Strategy consultants often leave at this point and let the client handle the execution, but in this case I was also involved in the next phase. That’s how I discovered the practical issues you often face while implementing a new concept, which the organization is not set up for yet. That sometimes results in frustration, but mostly satisfaction. It’s one of the reasons why I built a close connection to the core team. I still speak to some of them now and then."
