Insight into the cost of medical devices

Suppliers and a health insurer came together with one question: how do we get insight into the actual cost of medical devices? Transparency on this is the basis for internal decision-making and external accountability. It is important that this is not a one-off exercise but a durable model, carried by all of the organizations involved. Gupta took this on together with the suppliers and the insurer. As a trusted third party, we guaranteed information security and confidentiality.

From analysis to action
Together with the suppliers, we developed a cost model that gives insight into the use and cost of thousands of medical devices. We combined financial data, logistics information and clinical records. In workshops with clinicians, procurement staff and controllers, we mapped the main cost drivers and explored variation between care providers.

Key questions:

  • Which devices are used where and when — and why?
  • What are the differences in cost per treatment or patient group?
  • Where are the opportunities for improvement?

The result: a robust and flexible cost model that not only gives insight, but also provides direction for strategic choices in procurement, use and innovation.

A foundation for future-proof healthcare
The cost study has led to greater transparency, better conversations with suppliers, and broader awareness. Above all, it has contributed to greater mutual trust and better contracting between care providers and health insurers.

What I enjoyed about this project was that we didn’t just calculate the costs, we were also able to give providers and the insurer new insights into how those costs are built up and what the main cost drivers are.”
