Rebuilding after bankruptcy
In October 2018, MC IJsselmeerziekenhuizen went bankrupt, a historic event in Dutch healthcare. But the rebuilding of hospital care in Lelystad after this bankruptcy is equally remarkable. In just three months, St Jansdal hospital in Harderwijk managed to set up a large part of hospital care anew.
Looking back, we are proud of what was achieved together in such a short period. Within just a few months, St Jansdal hired more than four hundred people and delivered what was, at the time, the fastest implementation of the Epic electronic health record ever achieved anywhere in the world. In addition, a hospital building was fitted out with equipment and communication systems. All of this while demand for care in Harderwijk was higher than ever.
Together with St Jansdal, we produced a book (in Dutch) offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at the many events that took place in this short period, supplemented with accounts from people involved. By sharing our experiences we hope to help policymakers and others in similar situations to learn from this. We believe these insights can contribute to improving healthcare in the Netherlands. The book describes the events from our own perspective and is by definition subjective.
